For $250, you can train one community midwife to treat up to 500 women a year. Africa has a critical shortage of health workers. While there are 90 doctors and nurses for every 1,000 people in the U.S., there is less than 1 for every 1,000 people in Africa. Every year, nearly 200,000 women die during childbirth in sub-Saharan Africa. These deaths are linked to the fact that women living in rural, nomadic or slum communities do not have access to basic reproductive and maternal health services. Over 80% of these deaths could have been prevented with the assistance of a midwife. The campaign began in 2010, and we have a goal of training 15,000 midwives by the end of 2015. Your contibution allows AMREF USA to continue training midwives to reach countless women in need in Africa.
