Classroom Libraries in the US

Gives 1 classroom library
Gift Description:
$100 gives a classroom a library filled with age-appropriate books. 1 billion people will enter the 21st century illiterate, unable to read or sign their names. Studies show that of the nearly 1 billion illiterate, two-thirds are women. This gift helps promote reading and literacy, education, and creative thinking for youth who, in developing nations, would most likely never otherwise own a book. Research has also found that literacy has a strong impact on society. For example, 85% of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate, and more than 60% of all prison inmates are functionally illiterate. More generally, reading has been shown to increase intelligence, brain power, empathy, and aid in fighting Alzheimer's.
